may madness
every woman knows to follow the rabbit.
the rabbit tells the truth when others don't.
a golden chain braided in wisps of white fur
holds a face of watchful arrows.
it mouths at us:
you're late, late, late.
with hour-glasses for feet,
we run into black, earthy holes,
through mossy stairways, upside down,
we
fall,
wilt through fields of flowers, once as red
as the lips of your high school sweetheart.
the world thrives on shattered mirrors,
they can only reflect what distorts you.
and still, we refuse to trade our curious hearts,
and still, we follow the rabbit,
even as it pulls our hair, screaming
what we knew all along:
time, we've never had it.
